Organs
While we love all of our gear equally, our collection of vintage organs is certainly amongst our most unique offerings.
Presto
1969 Hammond B-3 (Refurbished)
Presto spent its youth as one of the house B-3’s in the famed NYC Record Plant Studios. It was played by innumerable artists such as Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, John Lennon (where he did most of his solo work), Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, Aerosmith, and many others who worked in the main RPS Studio A..
The organ is named for Paul ‘Presto’ Prestopino, the unique and versatile main studio tech (and excellent folk musician) who kept the classic piece in pristine condition all those years. He also customized the studio’s main Hammond with a footswitch jack to control the Leslie speed and patch/insert points on the organ for pedals or other accessories.
This B-3, with all of its nicks, scratches, and burns, rocked the legendary Record Plant in New York City for years…it’s perfect for providing that classic rock-and-roll crunch, especially when paired with the original Record Plant Leslie or the “Memphis” style 122 we call “Nightmare”. Presto also sounds great though our 50s vintage Leslie 45, one of the first rotating speaker designs, which only features Tremelo (Fast) or Brake (Off).
Eve
1964 Hammond B-3 (Refurbished)
For many years in the 60s and 70s, Presto’s older sister Eve was the selected instrument to accompany elusive Philly jazz singer Eve Ross. The instrument was found in a Northeast Philly club where it was played behind a bar with a Rhythm Ace drum machine on top. Eve was retiring…
After spending many months getting carefully cleaned and rebuilt back to its early glory (she was full of nightclub smoke, drink, feathers, and glitter!), the organ was returned to us sounding cleaner, crisper, and jazzier than anything since its birth year of 1964.
This beautiful rig also has the original bench and foot pedals, tweaked and cleaned of the bar grime as well, plus connectors to a Hammond Tone Cabinet, Leslie 145 and/or Leslie 122.
Dot
Hammond A-100
Our vintage Hammond A-100, a model favored by Jimmy Smith, is humble yet mighty, just like her original owner Dorothy Saylor. “Dot” was an accomplished musician, artist, and competitive swimmer as well as a creative wedding invitation designer and entrepreneur.
“Dot” lives in the Control Room where she is able to be recorded directly through a DI for a particularly unique sound. Additionally, this sweet Hammond can be run through a dedicated Leslie 122 all miked up and ready to go in the adjacent piano booth - or if you’re really feeling frisky, Dot can do both at the same time.
She also sounds great through her built-in speakers and reverb! Any and all sonic combinations are excellent for recording and especially overdubbing in the comfort of the CR. This is one of our favorite pieces.
